Saturday 11th January 1908
Blackpool’s hopes of an FA Cup run were cruelly dashed in December 1907 when the draw for the first round paired them with Manchester United, at the time nicknamed ‘the team of talent’. United were top of the First Division with 14 wins and two defeats in their 16 games and with 50 goals scored and only 21 conceded; Second Division Blackpool meanwhile had only won two and drawn five of their 15 games with 23 goals scored and 30 conceded. One Manchester writer assessed the tie with “It would be a case of David slaying Goliath were Blackpool to beat Manchester United at Bank Street, where the present League leaders have not so much as forfeited a point.” And there was no giant killing act by Blackpool who lost 3-1 on 11 January 1908 with ‘Alty’ Grundy scoring the consolation goal.
Saturday 11th January 1936
Television, or cine, cameras are nothing new to Bloomfield Road for on 11 January 1936 a member of the Tower Company staff filmed Blackpool’s 3-1 FA Cup tie win against Margate at Bloomfield Road for later showing at the Winter Gardens and Grand Theatre. Club Captain Phil Watson was presented with a giant stick of rock in Blackpool colours at one end and Margate colours at the other which had been made by local firm Waller & Hartley before the tie between the two sides. It is very likely that Blackpool’s victory on that January day of 1936 was the first captured on film from the ground.
