Monday 17th January 1983
The Football League announced that Blackpool were to be deducted two points for fielding an ineligible player. John Butler had played three games two in the league and one League Cup tie without his registration having been confirmed. Blackpool explained that they had signed him on September 8 and immediately sent off his registration forms to the Football League, who were then based in Lytham St Annes. Blackpool chose not appeal as there were stiffer options available to the committee. The points deduction saw Pool slip two places before ultimately finishing 21st and needing to apply for re-election, had they not been docked two points they would have finished safely in 18th place.
