Friday 1st January 1937
Bury presented Blackpool with a huge box of black puddings on New Year’s Day 1937 at Gigg Lane before the home Division Two game between the two sides in recognition of the team’s eight match winning streak. Bury were then beaten 3-2 but the nine game run ended in front of 26,229 at West Ham the following day when Blackpool were noticeably tired and jaded after a long haul to London.
Saturday 1st January 1938
New Years day proved to be a winner for Blackpool as they entertained Huddersfield Town and 22,362 saw them romp home to the tune of 4-0. Lying just a point above bottom place Portsmouth on 19 points they needed the win. The Seasiders had been promoted to Division One the previous season when they finished runner-up to Leicester City and they eventually recovered to finished 12th with 40 points in Division One
Friday 1st January 1965
Stanley Matthews received the news he was to be knighted for his services to football. He was the first professional footballer to receive the honour and the only one to receive it whilst still playing. He had previously been awarded the CBE in 1957.
Thursday 1st January 1974
Blackpool FC switched on their new £20,000 floodlights at Bloomfield Road for the visit of Sheffield Wednesday which was helped by the loan of a generator by the management of the local paper the Evening Gazette. Following tests prior to the game the club were confident everybody would be highly-pleased with the brightness of the new “floods” once they were switched on. A crowd of 11,362 attended the match itself which ended 0-0, their third draw in as many games.
Saturday 1st January 1994
The 18,168 crowd at Turf Moor for the Lancashire derby between Burnley and Blackpool on New Years Day 1994 was the highest Division Two attendance that season. The 3-1 win for the Clarets left Blackpool in 11th place on 33 points.
