Wednesday 20th January 1937
With Blackpool surging towards the First Division they were favourites to win their third round FA Cup tie against Division Three (South) Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on 16 January 1937. Sure enough Blackpool were leading 3-1 with goals from Bobby Finan, Dickie Watmough and Jack Middleton with five minutes remaining and Luton down to ten men. But the Hatters fought back to force a 3-3 draw. They came to Bloomfield Road for the replay on 20 January when the forecast was they would be “butchered on half day closing” but they confounded the critics by winning 2-1.
Thursday 20th January 1972
Goalkeeper George Wood, signed by Blackpool for a fee of £10,000 (£7,000 initially plus an extra £3,000 after 12 first team appearances) from East Stirling on 20 January 1972, made his League debut for Blackpool against Oxford United on 15 April 1972 which Blackpool won 2-0. He was second choice until John Burridge’s transfer in September 1975 gave him his chance and he took it with both hands. He was “in superb form” as Blackpool drew 0-0 with Arsenal in a third round League Cup replay at Highbury on 28 September 1976. Wood was transferred to Everton for a fee of £150,000 on 18 August 1977.
