Friday 24th December 1976

0893015aHe made his name at Manchester City before he was transferred to Burnley for a fee of £25,000 in June 1975 and he played 51 league games for the club. Apparently, the transfer to Blackpool had been the chairman’s idea and not that of manager Allan Brown. Summerbee later admitted that he should not have joined the club.

He made his delayed Blackpool debut against Hull City on 1 January 1977 when the game was drawn 0-0 but much was expected for the local press headline read Summerbee adds power and craft. The accompanying report stated, "The one bright beacon in a gloomy display was the form of Christmas Eve sighing Mike Summerbee. The ex-Manchester City and England winger who was freed by Burnley made a mockery of his 34 years – and the fact that his debut was delayed because of a groin injury. Summerbee certainly added more bite when he was chasing and tackling in midfield. Rarely did any of his passes go astray and many of them were gems of inventiveness. Neither can there be any doubts about his ability or fitness to last a game. He was still playing as strongly at the end as at the start. So Summerbee is going to add power and craft to Blackpool's play."
