Saturday 24 January 1914
Blackpool finished the game against Huddersfield Town on 24 January 1914 with only eight men as Ben Green, Tommy Charlton and Billy Rooks had to retire injured. There was at the time “some little difference of opinion as to how far the Huddersfield defenders were responsible for the series of misfortunes that Blackpool suffered”. Blackpool finished the game with no formation as the players “just went where the ball was” in their efforts to equalise; they did not do so and Huddersfield won 1-0.

‘Chester is Cup Tie Crazy’ read the newspaper headlines in Chester as the local team from the Third Division North had drawn the mighty Blackpool from Division One in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Manager Joe Smith had warned ‘There are no certainties in the Cup’. Blackpool took the lead on seven minutes as full-back Eddie Shimwell’s hopeful 60 yard punt hit the frozen turf and bounced over the unfortunate Chester goalkeeper’s head into the net and Mortensen made it 2-0 before half-time. Stan Matthews ran the Chester defence ragged after the break as Morty and Harry Johnson scored further goals to make it 4-0.

Blackpool’s FA Cup fourth round visit to Bristol City was the only time that Stanley Matthews would appear at Ashton Gate. An enormous crowd of 42,594 only a few hundred short of City’s all time record “gate” saw Bert Tindill’s first half goal cancelled out by Ray Charnley (pictured here against Arsenal) as the Robins held the Seasiders to a 1-1 draw. Bristol City flew to Blackpool for the replay four days later, losing 1-0 to Dave Durie’s second half goal.
