Friday 25th December 1931
A 4-2 defeat by Chelsea on Christmas Day, and then once more off to Stamford Bridge, which was rapidly becoming synonymous with Christmas as far as the Blackpool footballers were concerned. Turkey was served on the train for the players and plum pudding also; it was apparently served to the footballers in error but too late to be changed and Blackpool paid the price as the Boxing Day encounter was lost 4-1. Unfortunately, the diet could not be offered as an excuse because the Chelsea players were travelling on the same train and they too had a Christmas meal served in error! The result left Blackpool in the relegation zone, four places and two points below Chelsea.
Saturday 25th December 1965
The last Christmas Day fixture at Bloomfield Road was the 4-2 defeat of Blackburn Rovers. The scorers that day were Ball, Charnley, Turner and Waddell. The Football League announced: “Christmas Day matches were dropped from our calendar when it became obvious to all concerned – spectators, players and officials alike – that people preferred to spend Christmas Day at home.”
Dave Durie
He always exercised the privilege, contained in every professional footballer's contract at the time, of not playing on Christmas Day and Good Friday. He said of his decision "I have nothing against those who do play on those days. I think it's a matter for the individual."
Bill Perry
He scored a Christmas Day hat-trick, his fourth for the club, in a 4-2 defeat of Preston North End on 25 December 1958.
