Saturday 30 January 1897
Cowlairs-born forward George McLay was signed by Blackpool on 20 January 1897 when he stated that he had been selected for Scotland in 1894 but that he had been unable to turn out due to injury. However, it quickly became apparent that he was not up to the task and seven days after signing he was told that his services were no longer required. But on 30 January 1897 one of the Blackpool players did not turn up for a Lancashire Combination game against Blackburn Rovers reserves at Raikes Hall. And McLay “pleaded hard for the opportunity to show his worth” so he was given an opportunity. In the game he was “a rank failure” for, as a forward, he “did not appear to have the faintest conception of modern methods of attack”. With the crowd baying for his removal, he was pushed back to half-back but unfortunately he was “not one whit better in that position” and was deemed “worse than useless”. Blackpool suffered a 5-1 defeat and not surprisingly he was given his “marching orders".

The Seasiders chairman reacted with anger after Blackpool lost out to rank outsiders Manchester in the race for the UK's first supercasino as he felt that the bombshell news could drive potential investors away from buying up space in the South Stand. Oyston has previously insisted work would only begin on the long-awaited South Stand when office space had been snapped up. "We have invested significantly in the footballing side and it's extremely disappointing this scandalous decision may hamper what Blackpool is trying to achieve." Work on the South Stand was initially due to have started in September but had to be put back.
