Saturday 3rd January 2004
Aiyegbeni Yakubu's injury time winner broke Blackpool hearts after Scott Taylor had earlier notched his 6th FA Cup goal of the season at Fratton Park. Steve McMahon's men finally fell to the home side's pressure when Teddy Sheringham's header deep into injury time from a Matthew Taylor corner was saved by keeper Lee Jones only for fellow striker Yakubu Ayegbeni to ram home the rebound. Gareth Evans was sent off 2 minutes into stoppage time but it meant little as the final whistle was as good as blown. Blackpool boss Steve McMahon hailed football a "cruel game" after seeing his side slip to the 2-1 FA Cup third round defeat against Premiership Portsmouth.
Saturday 3rd January 2009
Torquay United had reached the FA Cup third round with victories over Chipstead, Evesham and Oxford United whilst the Seasiders' caretaker boss Tony Parkes had to make do without a host of loan players who left the club earlier in the week. At a freezing cold Plainmoor the Gulls subsequently inflicted a massive cup upset when just past the half-hour Mark Green took down a long pass and placed an accurate left-foot shot past Pool’s keeper Paul Rachubka his goal was enough to sink Championship Blackpool and put non-league Torquay into the hat for the fourth found.
